On March 13th Chris, Jack and I headed to Iowa City for Jack’s check up appointments with ophthalmology and neurosurgery.  He had skull x rays, followed by the two doctor visits.  We were so pleased with the news that Dr. Menezes, the neurosurgeon will not need to do bone grafting.  He decided a CAD/CAM customized plate to replace his missing skull bone will be the best option.  Prior to this news, we had always planned on the possibility of a two stage surgery with rib grafting.  We are so relieved to not have to worry about such extensive surgery for Jack in the future.  Cranial surgery will likely be when Jack is 8.  The doctors want to wait until Jack’s skull is nearly done growing.  Dr. Olson, the ophthalmologist, said that Jack was ready for eye surgery at any time and we have it scheduled for this coming December.  The doctor thinks that Jack’s depth perception will improve, helping his hand eye coordination.  We felt so encouraged by all this news.

We also managed to have a lot of fun heaping all our attention on Jack.  We had a nice car ride to Iowa City. I sat in the back with Jack and watched movies with him.  We got settled at the hotel and ordered pizza.  My good friend Shane met us at the hotel and we were able to relax and chat for awhile.  After Shane left we got ready to swim.  Jack and Chris had a blast going on the water slide over and over again.  We finished off the night in the hot tub.  I think Jack felt pretty special having his mom and dad all to himself for a day!
