Elf on a Shelf….Christmas Traditions

010

Here is our new family member….Buddy….our Elf on a Shelf.

011

Our family was just introduced to Elf on a Shelf.  My dental assistant suggested we order one, and the same day Jack’s preschool teacher suggested the same thing to Chris.  We ordered one and were so excited when he arrived.  We sat down by the fireplace and read the book, all four of us, with our new elf still in the box.  After the book, the kids were NOT happy that they could not take the elf out of the box.  Jack started to cry and suddenly Chris and I thought our brilliant idea was not such a good one.  We convinced the kids to go upstairs and put on their jammies.  Chris took “Buddy” out of the box and placed him on the windowsill.  When the kids saw Buddy had moved, they were so excited and were in AWE of the fact that his magic helped him fly to another room.  So far Buddy has hung out on the microwave, the kitchen light fixture, and on the candles in the bathroom.  The fact that Buddy is watching and reporting to the North Pole every night to talk to Santa about how Jack and Savannah are behaving has not made Jack behave any better.  I don’t think he cares about the fact that “Buddy is watching.”  But he sure does get excited when he moves locations throughout the day.  It is fun to establish new family traditions at Christmas time.

Last year we bought an Advent calendar and moved mini Pablo from day to day.  This year mini Pablo ended up in the trash since Jack and Savannah could not stop fighting over it and instead we are using a candy cane to count down the days until Christmas.  It is fun to see how the kids are actually old enough and are excited for Christmas this year.  We have a great Christmas to look forward to, since I will 11 days in a row off!!!  We are going to spend Christmas in Sioux City with our families, then a few cozy days at home, followed by a great New Years!  Chris and I are thrilled to have PLANS this year, going out with Christina, Amy, Jacob and a bunch of Christina’s friends in Des Moines.  I can’t wait!!
